Adult Playwrighting Workshop

Adult students will be inspired to shape their ideas and start, rewrite or complete their scripts with internationally produced playwright Jason Pizzarello, in the new Playwriting Workshop at the Darien Arts Center. The workshop, available to those 18 and older, takes place on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., September 20th through November 1st.

Over the six-session workshop, students will conquer the blank page together by focusing on core story building blocks: character, conflict, structure, dialog, dramatic action, and theatricality. Each class will offer weekly writing exercises, constructive feedback, rewriting techniques, and building community and trust within the group. Participants will work on new short plays they hope to rewrite, finish, or start. By the end of the workshop all students will have a new ten-minute play, culminating with an invited staged reading of the groups’ newest work. Fee for the workshop is $300 (plus a $35 registration fee).

Over thirty of Jason Pizzarello’s plays are published and have been produced in all 50 states and in 22 countries, including a Norwegian translation. The Actors Theatre of Louisville has selected five of his short plays as Heideman Award finalists and his work has also been featured in Actor’s Choice: Scenes for Teens, Actor’s Choice: Monologues for Women, and Random Acts of Comedy (Playscripts). His play Bethel Park Falls is part of Everyday Inferno Theatre Company’s 2018 season, directed by Christine Zagrobelny in NYC Central Park. Other recently developed plays include After People Like You at Classic Stage, with director Anna Brenner; Providence Adrift with Meghan Finn at 3LD; Half Right, with director Michelle Bossy and the Fordham Alumni Company; All I Really Need to Know I Learned From Being a Zombie with director Damen Scranton at Irondale Ensemble; and When I Had Three Sisters with director Lila Neugebauer in the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab. Pizzarello is also the co-founder of Stage Partners, a licensing house for new plays for young actors.
