ERIKA CAPUTO

Students will create developmentally appropriated art projects using the elements of art. A variety of different media and techniques will be explored. Students will create using pastels, watercolor, ink and more. New projects are planned each session to accommodate new and returning students.

Students will work on aspects of character and story development in relation to 3 or 4 panel comics, one page story cartoons and graphic novels/comic books. Alongside lessons in perspective, composition, color, frame variation and story-boarding, students will also use their imaginations and creative ideas as they engage in fun drawing exercises and class starters! Shorter pieces will lead into the bigger projects of flip-books and a book of comic strips or a graphic novel. Projects will accommodate returning students as well as students new to cartooning.

Students of all ages learn to use their digital device to capture amazing photos. Some of the photography skills that will be covered include: rule of thirds, filling the frame, negative space, scale and focal point. Students are to bring their own digital point and shoot camera, or IPhone.

DRAWING AND PAINTING

All levels are welcome. The class will include traditional and experimental materials. Students will draw figures, landscapes, portraits, still life as well as images from their imaginations. Technical drawing skills will be developed while individual creativity will be encouraged. New projects will be planned each session to accommodate new and returning students.

Looking for something to do during February break? Come spend the afternoon learning about some of the world’s greatest artists, and create your own mini masterworks in the process! During each session, the students will learn about artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Da Vinci and more, and take what they learn to create their own masterworks based on the techniques and styles of the masters. At the end of each session, the students will have completed their own masterworks. All materials included.

Looking for something to do during spring break? In this exciting week long camp, students will be introduced to the art of fashion design. Students will learn about different materials and styles of clothing, and use the techniques they are learning to create their own piece of clothing by the end of the week. Sewing machines and all materials will be provided.

INTRODUCTION/INTERMEDIATE CALLIGRAPHY

Calligraphy is a delicate and elegant yet endangered craft. This 6 week course is an introduction to the art form’s true meaning: calli- kalos in Greek, meaning “fine,” and -graphy from the Greek grapho meaning “write.” Following an old-school philosophy and beginning with the fundamental methods and principles of the calligrapher’s implements and materials, students will be taught key calligraphy terms, structural guidelines, scale, angles, direction and basic pen strokes. Starting with the dual-pencil technique, the class will progress to the broad edged calligraphy marker and eventually to the steel nib liquid pen while learning the Foundational Hand developed by Edward Johnston in the early 20th century (based on the 15th century Humanist script), which is the essential starting point for learning other hands such as italic, uncial, rustic and blackletter.

All skill levels are welcome. Beginning students will learn the fundamentals of watercolor painting, while more advanced students will work on their technique and overall composition. 

MOKI KOKORIS

This class is open to all levels. Depending on your level of expertise, this course will cover the fundamental techniques, color basics, layering, blending, surface textures, shading, as well as composition, background and creating atmosphere. Advanced students who have them should bring their own colored pencils.

In this month long class, students will learn the basics of taking beautiful digital photographs using their iphones or digital cameras. Topics that will be covered include: point and shoot techniques, photo-editing and uploading to a computer, and using Instagram and social media to display the photos.

Learn all the steps of the glass fusion process including glass cutting with Dorothy Hafner, award winning artist and designer. Compose fused glass pendants using a rainbow assortment of colored, metallic and patterned glasses supplied by the artist from her personal collection. Each student makes 3 separate designs. Silver bails and cotton cords are provided or bring your own chains. Finished pieces are ready for pick up at the Darien Arts Center in 2 weeks.

Ladies Night Out! SIP AND PAINT VAN GOGH SUNFLOWERS

Get into gear for spring and summer with an art filled evening where you will learn to paint beautiful sunflowers based on the paintings of Van Gogh. DAC painting instructor and artist Stephanie Lush-Mastriano will lead this vibrant and exciting workshop that is open to beginners or seasoned painters. A beautiful sunflower still life will be present, and the class will learn how to create their own interpretation of the beautiful scene. All materials will be provided, all levels welcome.
