DANCE RULES, ETIQUETTE & ATTIRE

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

§  Arrive to class on time. Should a student arrive more than ten minutes into class without this lateness having been discussed with and excused by the director and instructor prior to the class, they will not be allowed to participate in class and will be asked to observe. This is to prevent injury and maintain the focus and continuity of the class.

§  Arrive to class in proper attire. (See below.)

§  Leave cell phones turned off or on silent in bags in the waiting area before entering class.

§  Leave all belongings in the waiting area before entering class except for water bottles, which must be left by the wall when entering (not at the barre).

§  Permission must be granted before exiting the studio for any needs (bathroom break, etc.)

§  While in class, refrain from speaking. This includes while the class is learning combinations, while watching small groups dance and while individual students are receiving corrections. If a student has a question or would like to use the restroom, they may raise their hand to ask.

§  Injury does not preclude students from showing up to class. If students become injured, they are expected to observe classes and take notes for the duration of their injuries.

§  While in class, exercise respect for the instructor, for fellow classmates and for oneself. This includes, but is not limited to not using inappropriate language in class, full participation in class activities, demonstrating combinations when asked by the instructor and helping/collaborating with classmates when asked.

REHEARSAL EXPECTATIONS

§  Arrive to rehearsal no less than fifteen minutes early to warm up and review material from previous rehearsals.

§  Arrive in proper rehearsal attire. Attire should be reflective of the role being rehearsed. For example, if a student is rehearsing a classical ballet such as Nutcracker, leotard, tights and skirt with hair in a neat bun is appropriate. (See below.)

§  Be prepared to take notes and, toward the end of rehearsal, a video of the repertoire. Once choreography is given, it is the student’s responsibility to know the choreography.

§  While in rehearsal, refrain from speaking. This includes while learning new combinations, while individual students are receiving corrections and while running pieces.

§  Should a student become injured, it does not preclude them from showing up to rehearsal. Students are expected to observe and take notes for the duration of their injuries.

§  While in rehearsal, exercise respect for the choreographer, for fellow performers and for oneself. This includes but is not limited to using appropriate language in rehearsal, full participation in rehearsal activities, demonstrating combinations when asked by the choreographer and helping/collaborating with fellow performers when asked.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

§  Arrive on time for warm-up class before a performance and at least an hour and a half before show time for a performance call that does not have a warm-up class, so that students can properly warm up themselves.

§  Students are responsible for keeping their costumes assembled. Should any part of one’s costume need attention, please bring it to the attention of the director or instructor so that it can be mended.

§  Students are responsible for knowing how to do their hair for performances or having an older student or guardian assist them.

§  Students are required to have their own make-up kits for performances. They are also responsible for doing their own make-up. If assistance is needed, this should be arranged ahead of time.

§  Older students are expected to stay after a performance for post-show activities, discussions, notes, post-show clean up and strike.
