The Darien Arts Center is thrilled to spotlight Kaelyn Lee, the 2026 recipient of the prestigious Ginny Wright Scholarship. This $2,000 scholarship recognizes a Darien High School senior who demonstrates exceptional talent in visual arts and will continue their study of art or design in college. Kaelyn's award is a testament to her remarkable artistic vision and her deep commitment to using art as a form of communication that transcends language.
Lee's artistic journey began when her grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Unable to communicate through speech, Lee turned to the language she knew best through art and began painting watercolors with her grandmother every weekend. What started as a means of connection blossomed into a shared passion, profoundly shaping Lee's artistic philosophy and her conviction that art communicates what words cannot.
Through her AP Art portfolio, Lee explores the supermarket of her childhood, H Mart, through the eyes of a child, revealing the quiet sense of wonder hidden within routine moments. Her three featured pieces exemplify this vision: "First Taste of Spice," an oil painting capturing a childhood memory of discovering flavor; "The Color in the Check Out Aisle," a vibrant watercolor that contrasts how a child sees the world in color versus how adults see it in black and white; and "Swerving through Lanes," an imaginative oil painting that transforms an ordinary conveyor belt into a racetrack, complete with a red Hong Kong taxi that honors her family's heritage.
"Kaelyn's work is a beautiful example of the power of perspective and the transformative potential of artistic practice," said Lisa Koorbusch, Visual Arts Director at the Darien Arts Center. "Her ability to communicate emotion and meaning through visual storytelling, combined with her personal generosity and depth of reflection, makes her a truly deserving recipient of the Ginny Wright Scholarship."
The Ginny Wright Scholarship is awarded in memory of Virginia Wright, a talented artist, dedicated volunteer, and generous benefactor of the Darien Arts Center. It recognizes students who demonstrate both artistic excellence and a commitment to continuing their creative practice in college.
